A wider pot earns its keep in two ways. First, more mix gives you a larger moisture buffer, so a sunny balcony does not turn the surface into dust a few hours after watering. The moisture check is simple but not shallow. If the top 2–3 cm is dry and the container feels light, water is a reasonable first move.
